Dental Implants
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. It is placed in your jaw to hold a new tooth. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, injury, or some other reason. A dental implant is the best functional and aesthetic alternative to a natural tooth or teeth. They provide better chewing and funding than traditional prosthetic treatments and reveal the natural facial appearance.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
Natural teeth: A strong and stable dental implant restores a lost tooth to look, feel, fit and function like a natural tooth. Dental implants allow you to keep your teeth where they belong – in your mouth. Your teeth replaced with dental implants are exactly as you would your teeth - brush, floss and care for your mouth.
Built to last: Traditional, tooth-supported dental bridges only last five to ten years. While dental implants may need to be adjusted periodically, they can last a lifetime if properly placed and cared for over time.
Maintain your natural face shape: A toothless face can sag and look sunken and sad. Dental implants allow you to maintain the natural shape of your face and smile.
Maintain healthy bone: Leaving an empty space in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to additional health problems, such as the loss and deterioration of some of your jawbones. When not used to support a natural tooth, the jawbone deteriorates and loses its strength and firmness. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone, actually helping to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss.
Speak easy: Adapting to removable dentures can mean you have trouble pronouncing everyday words. This is not the case with dental implants that work like natural teeth.
Protect your healthy teeth: Dental implants go into the jawbone where your missing tooth root is without affecting healthy teeth. They also help prevent healthy, adjacent teeth from slipping if an empty space is left for an extended period of time.
Before the Procedure - Consultation and Travel
To prepare for the process, it is important to have a thorough evaluation that includes a thorough examination and a treatment plan. A comprehensive examination includes dental x-rays and models showing teeth and mouth. The treatment plan takes into account factors such as how many teeth you need and the condition of your jawbone. It is also important to tell your dentist about all medical conditions and medications you take.
What Happens During a Dental Implant?
The dental implant procedure is a multi-step procedure. With local anesthesia, your mouth will be thoroughly enumerated. An incision is made in your gums where the implant will go to expose the bone underneath. The dentist will then use a special drill to make a space in the jawbone. The implant is then screwed into place. After the implant is in place, a second component, which is placed on the dental implant and acts as a placeholder, will be screwed into the implant and will remain in place during the healing process. The gums are closed on the implant. At the end of these procedures, you go through a healing process that can take 2 to 4 months.
Once the healing period is over and the implant has fused to the bone, the dentist places the abutment, which is an extension of the implant metal post, and then inserts your new artificial tooth.
How Long Does It Take to Place Dental Implants?
It depends on the number and location of the implants, but simple, uncomplicated dental implant placement usually takes less than an hour.
What Happens After Dental Implant Treatment?
You may need pain medication or antibiotics after dental implant surgery. Contact your oral surgeon if swelling, discomfort, or any other problem gets worse in the days after surgery. After each stage of the surgery, you may need to eat soft foods while the surgery site heals. The adaptation / fusion period may take between 3-6 months. After this time has passed, you will return to complete your treatment.
